LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND TEENS

Instructional books from the music store are usually incredibly boring for kids.  Children and teens love to play songs they are already familiar with.  If they’re going to learn quickly, they need something to grab their attention.

For a young child, it might be Twinkle Twinkle Little Star or Mary Had a Little Lamb.  For a teen, it might be an Imagine Dragons song, or the latest pop song they’ve been hearing on the radio.

By allowing children and teens to choose the music they learn, they are much more likely to practice!  Also, by teaching a song that is already familiar, the student is much more likely to notice and correct mistakes all on their own.

I have spent the last fifteen years teaching private lessons in the northwest as well as group classes for the Anacortes School District.  I recognize that children benefit from having choices in their learning process as well as structured guidance.  I keep the lessons enjoyable while providing just enough pressure to encourage growth and learning.

My goal is always to find a balance between having fun and promoting rapid learning and true musicianship.
